Labour Welfare Centre

As an initiative to help the women folk of labour families, Labour Welfare Centres are functioning since 1957. So far 14 Labour and child welfare centers have been running in the U.T of Puducherry region. (Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam). There are 8 labour Welfare Centers in Puducherry region, Gandhi nagar, Mudhaliarpet, Ariyankuppam, Villianur, Koodapakkam, L.R. Palayam, Madagadipet and Sedarapet. The women folks hailing from labour families are given training in cutting and tailoring, embroidery and needle work and various handicraft works such as knitting crochet bags, flower vase/ stands, fancy dolls out of wool and beads as a mean to utilize their spare time to supplement their family income. Trainees who have passed 10th and 12th standard are sent for the Government Technical Examinations conducted by Tamil Nadu Technical Board in the trade of cutting and tailoring in Lower as well as Higher grades. Trainees who have completed one year of training are issued certificates by the Labour Department so as to enable them tyo acquire jobs in private sector. The maximum number of trainees to be trained in each centre is 40

Skill Development short term courses are conducted in rural areas to up skill the rural women folk thereby making them self employed and self reliant for SC candidates as well as for general Candidates

Various Skill Development short term courses such as Aari Work, Beautician course, Textile Printing, Jewel Making, Sabeena & Phenol making, Candle & Agarbathi making, Vegetable & Food processing, Doll making etc., for the women folks hailing from labourers family through 14 Labour Welfare Centres both in Urban / Rural areas for both General and SC candidates are being provided.
