The Puducherry Shops and Establishments Act, 1964

The Puducherry Shops and Establishments Act, 1964 provides for the regulation of conditions of work in shops, commercial establishment, theatres and other establishments. It enables the Government to fix the opening and closing hours of shops and establishments. For Shops, 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m., Establishments, 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m., Cinema theaters, 12.00 noon to 11.50 p.m. Further, it prohibits the employment of children, i.e, persons who have not completed fourteen years of age in shops, commercial firms, etc..The employment of young persons, i.e. persons who have completed fourteen but not seventeen years, before 6.00 a.m. and after 7.00 p.m. has also been prohibited

An employer seeking registration of establishments shall send a statement in Form-I as prescribed under the Puducherry Shops & Establishments Rules, 1964 within 30 days from the date of commencement of the shop/Establishment to the concerned area Inspector

The fees to be paid together with the statement are as specified below:

Exceed 100 and above 2500.00

Renewal of a registration Certificate before the date of expiry and fees are same as specified for Registration

The Theater owners who seek exemption under the Act for the conduct of special shows are required to submit an application in the office of the Labour Officer (Enforcement), Puducherry, at least seven clear working days (excluding public holidays) before the date for which such exemption is required

The Labour Officers and the Assistant Inspectors of Labour have been declared as inspectors under this act

Time Limit
The time limit for Registration / Renewal under this Act is One Day.
