History

To enforce Labour Legislation and to administer Labour Laws, the Office of the Labour Officer (Enforcement) was established during the year 1970 under the head of Inspector of Factories. Subsequently in 1980, the Labour Office (Enforcement) was made a separate cell and the Labour Officer (Enforcement) was appointed as the Head of Office and also declared as Controlling Authority under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972. The Office of the Labour Officer (Enforcement) is enforcing the following Central Acts and State Acts/Rules

  1. The Puducherry Shops and Establishments Act,1964
  2. The Puducherry Catering Establishments Act, 1964
  3. Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972
  4. The Puducherry Contract Labour (Regulation & Abolition) Act,1970
  5. Minimum Wages Act, 1948
  6. Motor Transport Workers Act, 1961
  7. The PuducherryIndustrial Establishments (National & Festival Holidays) Act, 1964
  8. The Building and other Constructions (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1996
  9. The Building and Other Construction Worker's Welfare Cess Act, 1996
  10. Equal Remuneration Act, 1976
  11. Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Act, 1986
  12. Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976
  13. Working Journalists and Other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1955

A scheme viz., "Strengthening of Enforcement Machinery and Implementation of various Labour Laws" is being implemented and a budgetary provision of Rs.14.86 lakhs (Non-Plan) and Rs.1.98 lakhs (Plan) is allocated for the purpose during the current financial year
